1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Refresh

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program encourages parents and caregivers to read to build early literacy skills with their children. This project focused on refreshing our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program for a new generation of children.

Many libraries offer 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten as a large part of their youth services programming. At my library, our 1,000 Books program has been the same for a long time, but in 2024, I made a SMART Goal to update it for a new generation of young children.

The pictures above are of the new game board that shows children's progress in the program and the literature given to each family at the beginning of the program to keep track of their child's progress.

I researched how other libraries keep track of their 1,000 Books programs and how they keep track of their participants' progress. It was decided that in the future, we would track our children's progress on a simple Excel form.

Due to this refresh of our program, several new families have signed up to participate. I hope to have a celebration for my children who complete the program.
